I’m not sure exactly what Kelsium is referring to about college education but of course I will open my big mouth and add a bit.
Remember The Atlantic article awhile back about the Basement of the Ivory Tower? It was written by an English instructor at a community college. (Here’s a link that mentions the original article and a bunch of follow-up pieces.) The gist of it was that not everyone should be in college. I have a friend who taught intro. English at our local community college and the stories she told left me incredulous. Not just the writing they believed acceptable but the weird conspiracy theories they spouted (this was around election season).
I believe education is vital. That said I’m not sure everyone is cut out for a college degree at this point in time. I think we are making a lot of progress. In my parents generation it was possible to get by without a high school degree. My sister and brother are about a decade older than me and in their generation a high school diploma was acceptable, although it was quickly becoming necessary to get some sort of college degree. For my generation I think a BS or BA is pretty much the norm. A lot of my younger friends have a graduate degree, which seems to be getting more and more common.
I’m not entirely sure where I’m going with this, other than we’re making progress. Sure, it’s not affordable (I’m still paying off my measly BA from Ohio State) but I don’t think it’s completely out of reach.
